Chavalos Nica is a group of students sponsored by various individuals from many countries. The programs objective is to get private school education for these great kids. Public schools in Nicaragua are many times not the best they could be due to class size, lack of money and poorly educated teacher. Kids in public schools just don’t get the education they need to succeed in life. Private schools are more often better regulated with better educated teachers.
Why is Education So Important
Education is the key to a better world for everyone everywhere, not just underprivileged children. An education is not just books and facts; it is also social and emotional growth. Our program will help children exercise their basic right to an education, paving the way for their growth in society.
The Problem
Due to extreme poverty, many Nicaraguan children forfeit their education and an ultimate chance for a decent life because they must drop out of school to beg on the streets, stay home to take care of younger siblings, or work to help support their family. In many cases, they also drop out because their parents simply cannot afford the uniforms and supplies necessary to send them to school. Our Sponsorship Program ensures educational opportunities for the kids and the chance for our donors to establish a one on one relationship with an individual student.
Chavalos Nica Program
Chavalos Nicas is a U.S. non-profit 501[c]3 organization registered in New Hampshire. As a non-governmental organization it. helps all children exercise their basic right to an education, paving the way for their growth and development in society.
Each sponsor is assigned one or more kids and communicates with that student. The students are required to communicate with their sponsor once a month. Sponsorship also allows a bond to form between student and sponsor. If that kid follows the program guidelines he will continue to be sponsored.
Sponsoring provides tuition, books and uniforms for the kids. They attend various private schools in and around Granada. They are also provided tutoring in computers, English and religion at the program directors home.
Our Model
Chavalos Nica is a small program. We have at most a few dozen kids at a time. They are enrolled in private schools in or near Granada. Kids are chosen by need and willingness to work hard and achieve certain standards to stay in the program. They must pass all classes and get good marks to stay with the program.
The History
The program was founded by Mickey Dodson in the 1990’s in Granada Nicaragua. She lives in Nicaragua and administers the program. In addition to running the program Mickey also tutors the kids as needed.
Sponsoring
We are a small group of volunteers and all your money goes directly to the student program. There are no administrative costs. Any money left after tuition is spent on special projects for the kids.
Sponsor Responsibility
Sponsors are required to commit $30 per month and to support their kid through to the end of secondary schooling. Communicate with your kid to let them know that their sponsor is there and interested in them.
Chavalos organization and direction
The Chavalos Nica program is administered by a board of directors and Ms Dodson. She directs the program and and is full time overseer of the program.
Or goal is to get as many kids as possible into good schools and graduated. We also hope that many of these kids continue to college and become participants in Nicaragua government and society.
